A little information about us…..

    We, the owners and developers of PoolSchool, are Ken and Louise Walker and we live in Alhaurín el Grande, Málaga. 

     In the UK we lived and worked in Peterborough, where we owned a Roofing Company and a Window Cleaning business with 1400 regular, monthly clients.  As a hobby, we jointly managed a semi-pro band for 5 years!

     Kens’ background, prior to moving to Peterborough, was 7 years in the REME (Royal Electrical & Mechanical Engineers) as an Instrument Technician specialising in Guided Missiles, followed by 5 years in 3 different Middle East Air Forces as an Instructor. 

     Whilst serving in Oman, Ken gained a little knowledge about pool maintenance by helping out, as an unpaid volunteer, on the 3 pools on the Airbase.  Whilst on leave from Qatar in 1986, Ken and Louise met at a darts match and married 10 weeks later in Qatar.

      Louise’s background is secretarial and sales with BUPA, Manpower and the Insurance industry. 

     We relocated to Spain in March, 2000 and within a month we were asked to take care of 6 pools on a weekly basis.  The person who had cleaned these pools for a Property Maintenance Company had broken his ankle by falling through a defective Skimmer Lid at a clients’ pool.  (His broken ankle was a lesson well learned by us. Thousands of people break their ankles in exactly this manner every year, and one of the first items we check at a clients’ pool is the skimmer lids - they cost the client about €6 each and could prevent a summer on crutches!)

     When we began pool cleaning in that spring of 2000 we were very successful at finding new clients. 

     A reputation for professionalism, regularity and efficiency of service, coupled with our unfailing cheerfulness, our optimism and our willingness to give free, impartial advice, brought many new, unsolicited clients to us. 

     Many of those new clients had pool problems that were associated with incorrect cleaning and sanitation methods, or a basic ignorance of pool chemistry, on behalf of their pool-cleaner and they had turned to us in desperation.  Some owners expressed a desire to learn how to clean their own pools but could not find the relevant information anywhere.

     Our business in those early days consisted almost totally of regular, weekly cleaning of Privately-owned swimming pools.  In July, 2000 we reached the point where we were cleaning 42 pools a week and could not take on further clients unless we employed Staff to carry out the work, so..... We trained a person to clean pools - and they left to find their own clients!

     We decided that, if we were to continue to train people to clean pools, we ought to pay attention to what frustrated pool-owners were telling us: - Offer to train the pool-owners themselves (and retain them as satisfied clients - forever).

     Thus, we wrote the PoolSchool Book and developed the PoolSchool Course

     At first, teaching people to clean their own pools may appear to be financial suicide but it really, really works.

     Can you imagine a car mechanic teaching his customers how to service their cars, so they won’t have to pay for it each time?  Or a dentist carefully explaining how to drill and fill your own teeth?   Would your local Chinese takeaway teach you how to cook a Chinese meal for 4 people for €2.50?  It’s not very likely, is it?

 PoolSchool is unique in offering to teach a pool-owner the correct method of caring for their pool. 

     Getting ‘poolside’ at a client’s house, at their invitation, gave us the opportunity to discuss the clients’ pool in an informal setting; in ‘their space’, with no pressure.

     This enabled us to suggest repairs, automatic pH regulators, pool-covers and rollers, heaters, etc.  Very often the clients bought these items from us, and more besides.

     We have trained almost nine hundred pool-owners in the last 8 years, many of whom buy products and services from us on a regular basis.  A small company like ours could not possibly clean and maintain hundreds of pools a week - but it can sell products and services to that many (and more) clients.

     Once we have trained someone to take care of their pool, and they are getting the results that they want, they return to us time and again for pumps, filters, covers, heaters, chemicals, tools, lights, and you-name-it.  Why would they approach a complete stranger for help and advice with their pool when they have had such good service from us already?

     Our target market for PoolSchool is anyone that owns or operates a pool, all of whom can use our services.

     The day-to-day growing reliance on our services is ever expanding, something that will only increase in the years to come. Franchising our business is a new venture for us and we have priced it attractively.

 

The PoolSchool Franchise

 

Your Investment

     PoolSchool Franchises are sensibly priced depending on the Territory chosen, plus IVA @ 16%.

     The IVA is reclaimable from the Government as a routine business expense item.

 

Potential Return on Investment

      We anticipate that a Franchisee will get their initial investment back and be profitable well within the first 12 months. 

     This is based on the expectation of 2 x ½-day PoolSchools per week, or approx. 100 in the first year (although you could get many more per week).

     In our experience, approximately 10% of PoolSchool clients buy a pool-heater, 20% buy a cover and/or a roller, 50% have other works done and almost 100% buy tools and/or chemicals at the time of the PoolSchool Course. The Course is taught at their pool and on their pool equipment so giving ample opportunity to gain the clients trust and make sales.

     Thereafter, those 100 clients will come back to you for chemicals, pump replacements, filter changes, Katchakid Safety Nets, pH regulators, LED Lights, Alarms; the list goes on and on.  At the end of year 2 you could have 200+ clients coming to you for further works, chemicals, etc. and the numbers will build as your business grows. 

This is not a ‘get-rich-quick scheme’, but it is a get-rich business!

 Marketing

     Leads are generated via our centralised advertising program, which is intensified in the Territories where Franchisees are located, and also through the efforts of the Franchisees themselves.  After all, a Franchise is owned by the Franchisee - why wouldn’t they shout their services from the rooftops?

     As Franchisors, we advertise on behalf of  Franchisees in Magazines, Newspapers, etc.

     Franchisees advertise in lots of different ways, including leaflets (5000 are provided with Franchise Package), vehicle graphics, personal recommendations, ex-patriate meeting places, Golf Clubs, etc.

     What the customer thinks of any business is strongly influenced by what they see and hear.  Our Marketing and Promotions program attracts new clients; a Franchisees’ profit potential has no limits.

     Of course, exactly how we go about this is strictly confidential company information. However, we will be happy to disclose the business operations in more detail if you show an interest in, and are accepted to, the next stage.

  • Whilst competent pool-cleaners certainly do exist, many others have little or no training in, or knowledge of, their chosen profession and therefore cannot maintain pools correctly or even, in many cases, safely.

  • Pool-cleaning is often viewed as an easy way to make a living in the sun and is frequently chosen as a ‘soft option’ by a newly-arrived ex-patriate.

  • Many pool-cleaners are unreliable; a small number are even routinely dishones!.

  • Most poorly-maintained pools go bad at some stage in the year; costing the pool-owner unnecessary expense and depriving them of the use of their pool.

  • The annual costs of maintaining an average private pool are in the region of €1500 - €2000, including chemicals and weekly visits by a pool-cleaner.

  • These costs are rising and will inevitably rise further over time.

  • Many pool-owners are retired people with limited incomes, i.e. Pensioners.

  • Sterling to Euro exchange rates have changed for the worse and many Pensioners are feeling the pinch as they get fewer Euros for their limited Sterling.

  • A pool-owner who understands how their pool operates can maintain it for €150 - €200 per annum, including all chemicals, and keep it in tip-top condition.  This represents huge cash savings every year for our clients.

  • Delivery of the PoolSchool Course to the client at the clients’ own pool.
